Genetics is undergoing a revolution that for the first time opens the way for people to
influence their own gene activity. Only 5% of disease-related gene mutations are fully deterministic, while 95% can be influenced by diet, behavior, and other environmental conditions.
Current models of well-being largely ignore genes, yet studies have shown that a program of positive lifestyle changes alter 4,000 to 5,000 different gene activities.
Over 70 million Baby Boomers are headed toward age-related disorders while finding themselves becoming caretakers for parents with Alzheimer’s. A current study shows that such caretakers live four to eight years less than non-caretakers since stress seems to create accelerated aging in their cells.
